The Weekly Download – April 24, 2020

It’s time for another weekly round-up of digital marketing and tech news, business updates and of course, Friday Fun.

We want to take a minute to acknowledge the tragedy that unfolded in Nova Scotia earlier this week. Several team members have a connection to the wonderful, beautiful province, and our hearts are with all of you during this extremely difficult and sad time.

Please consider tuning in to Nova Scotia Remembers, tonight’s virtual vigil in support of the victims and their loved ones.

On today’s agenda: Netflix’s jump in viewership, Google Meet’s Zoom-like updates, a new video chat transcription tool, Facebook’s “Care” reactions, and some work from home-themed Friday Fun.

Netflix is Now Worth More than Disney

Thanks to a surge in viewership during the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix announced its biggest quarter ever. Netflix is reporting an increase in 15.77 million new global subscribers in Q1 — a massive jump that puts the streaming company worth more than Disney.

With quarantine favourites like Ozark and of course, Tiger King, we’re not surprised to see the jump in viewers.

Google Meet Updates Look a Lot Like Zoom

Google Meet has seen an uptick in users thanks to the effects of COVID-19, so it’s not surprising that the company is working to upgrade and improve during this time.

Earlier this week, the video chat service updated a few new features, including a tiled layout that looks a lot like Zoom and allows users to see up to 16 participants at a time.

Other improvements: a low-light mode for calls at night, the ability to present a single Chrome tab instead of a specific window or your entire screen, and soon, Meet will get built-in noise cancellation (a welcome upgrade for those working from home with pets or small children!)

Automatically Transcribe Your Zoom Meetings as They Happen

And speaking of Zoom and video chat services, has a new feature that integrates directly with the Zoom platform to transcribe meetings on the fly.

Anyone on the call can click the “ Live Transcript” within their Zoom window to open up the Live Video Meeting Notes on’s site, and participants can then annotate as they go.

It’s a very exciting update for those who often find themselves struggling to keep up with notes and will make it much easier to remember the fine details of a meeting or webinar.

You’ll need a subscription to Zoom’s Pro tier or higher, plus an Otter for Teams subscription, but the service is currently offering two months for free with the code COVID19OTTER.

Will you be checking out the new tech?

Facebook Introduces New “Care” Reactions

After it was reported last month, Facebook has unveiled its “Care” reaction for Facebook and Messenger to help users express responses to COVID-19.

It’s a quick way for users to show their support, depicting a smiley face character hugging a heart. On Messenger, users will also have the option to change the existing “Heart” response to a purple animation.

Friday Fun

When it comes to #QuarantineChic, we just have to know… Is anyone else familiar with the Zoommullet?
