The Weekly Download – April 9, 2021

Welcome back to The Weekly Download! Here’s what you might’ve missed this week:

The end of Facebook Analytics, Reddit expands into Canada for the first time, Cannes Lions goes digital, a viral video with consequences, and Friday Fun.

The End of Facebook Analytics is Near

As of June 30, 2021, Facebook Analytics will no longer be available. This gives marketers less than just three months to explore new reporting options.

Facebook didn’t provide users a reason for its decision to close Facebook Analytics, but instead suggested data workarounds (which aren’t quite exact alternatives).

Marketers will have to adapt and use a combination of Facebook Business Suite, Ads Manager, and Events Manager in order to analyze and report on essential data – something we’ll be doing for our clients and partners.

Reddit Expands into Canada for the First Time Ever

Hey, Reddit – welcome to Canada, eh! The social news and forum platform just opened a hub on University Avenue in Toronto.

Reddit is joining the ranks of other tech giants like Netflix, TikTok, Pinterest, and Uber, and has already begun hiring staff for its office north of the border. According to blogTO, Canada is the website’s biggest market (after the U.S. and U.K.) and is growing rapidly at a rate of over 40 per cent each year, with more than 100,000 subreddits

Here’s what Reddit had to say about the new expansion:

“Canada is already home to a deeply engaged Reddit audience that is growing steadily by the day and it is a top priority for us and our internationalization strategy. Establishing a dedicated presence in the market will ensure best-in-class teams, tools and resources to continue to build out our growing user base and level-up our offering to local clients in a more focused, nuanced way.”

Cannes Lions 2021 Goes Digital

Good news for film lovers and movie buffs: LIONS has announced that Cannes Lions 2021 will be fully digital, running as Cannes Lions Live, from 21-25 June, replacing the famous annual event in Cannes, France.

According to a press release, Cannes Lions Live will bring outstanding live and on-demand content and experiences delivered by exceptional talent, as well as revealing, analysing and celebrating the winners of the Lions. Access to Cannes Lions Live is included in the fee for LIONS Membership.

Toronto Teacher Suspended After a Anti-Masking TikTok Video Goes Viral

This one’s a reminder that the internet is everywhere.

After a TikTok video of her refusal to wear a mask in a Starbucks went viral, a teacher from Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School in North York has been suspended. The video, which has since been taken down, shows the maskless woman arguing with a Starbucks staff member who is asking her to leave.

According to the Star, the staff member has been suspended and an investigation is underway following an influx of messages from concerned parents.
