We’ve got a lot to cover this week, including political social media blunders, underused influencer marketing, art gone digital, and of course, how could we forget the “covfefe”?

Social media snafu lands MPs in hot water

In case you needed a reminder to proof before you post, here’s one from this week: two Liberal MPs took to Facebook to share messages on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

One of the posts read as follows:
“Today … we are reminded that we must continue to work hard to make sure that everyone in [riding name] feels safe and free to be themselves.”

Failing to replace [riding name] with their riding name, MPs Julie Dzerowicz and Kyle Peterson were called out on social media for insincerity.

Everyone makes mistakes, but the blunders brought more important issues to the surface. The fact that some parliamentarians are passing off generic content as personal sentiments had some people seriously disappointed.
They’re surely not the first public figures to pull social content from an editorial calendar, but many felt that the lack of attention to detail downplayed the real message behind the post. What are your thoughts?

It’s time to get strategic about influencer marketing

According to a recent survey by Traackr and Top Rank Marketing, influencer marketing is being seriously underutilized. In fact, the majority of marketers surveyed reported spending less than $100,000 per year on influencer marketing – a tiny line on the budget for many big brands.

The real problem is that most companies are using influencer marketing as a one-off tactic, not a solid strategy. Instead, brands both big and small should map strategies to the customer experience and align influencers with buyers at each stage of the buying journey to see real returns.

Covfefe: Will we ever know its true meaning?

Ah… Another week, another midnight Trump tweet making headlines.
“Despite the constant negative press covfefe” was all he wrote (and soon after deleted).

But it’s had the Internet buzzing since. Some of these memes are just too good to pass up.

Digital museum guides coming to Google art search results

Art lovers, rejoice! Google is bringing masterpieces to you in a whole new way.
On Wednesday, Google announced that work done by their Arts and Culture team is being integrated into search results and Maps to allow users to better experience art online.

The new update will allow users to search for an artist, scroll through the museums where their work is located, view collections or work and zoom in on pieces so you can even see individual brushstrokes.

Internet Trends 2017: What you need to know

Kleiner Perkins venture partner Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report was released on Wednesday, and it’s full of interesting research and predictions when it comes to the world of digital and tech.
Some quick takeaways:

  • There’s still more time spent on mobile than ad spend, indicating huge returns on the horizon for mobile ad platforms
  • Google and Facebook control 85% of online ad growth
  • Internet ad spend will surpass TV spend within six months
