The Weekly Download — November 11, 2022

Hello, Friday! We hope you had a wonderful week. It’s time to wrap things up with a new edition of the Weekly Download.

On the agenda: How to share a digital poppy this Remembrance Day, Instagram’s new scheduling tool for creators goes live, there’s chaos at Twitter, what you need to know about Mastodon, and some very cute motivation in honour of Friday Fun.

Create and Share a Digital Poppy This Remembrance Day

Today we take time to remember and honour those who gave their all for our freedom.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to purchase a poppy yet this year, it’s not too late. For the fifth year in a row, the Legion National Foundation and the Royal Canadian Legion are providing Canadians with a digital way to share their support on Remembrance Day.

Visit mypoppy.ca to create a digital poppy, add a customized commemoration, and share it on social media. All donations support Canadian veterans.

Instagram’s New Scheduling Tool for Creators Goes Live

Creators, rejoice! Instagram has finally launched a new feature that will allow users to schedule content ahead of time to help curate feeds.

Until now, creators have had to rely on a number of third-party apps to schedule Instagram content. The update, which is available only to those with business and creator accounts, will allow users to schedule their grid posts, Reels, and carousels ahead of time.

Chaos Ensues at Twitter

With Elon Musk taking the helm just a couple short weeks ago, Twitter has reportedly fired half of its workforce. Now reports say that “dozens” of those employees are being asked back.

Last week we also shared Musk’s plans to roll out verified checkmarks to any Twitter Blue user willing to pay the $8 a month —- and it didn’t take long for the rollout to be rolled right back in after things didn’t quite go as planned.

Who could’ve predicted that?!

However, despite all the chaos, Twitter maintains that its user growth is at an “all time high.” Will it be enough for advertisers to return following their mass exit?

As always, we’ll be paying close attention to the news to come!

What You Need to Know About Mastodon Amid Twitter’s Disarray

Social media app Mastodon has been surging in popularity amid the disarray happening at Twitter.

According to CBC News, Mastodon is a “decentralized, open alternative from privacy-obsessed Germany” that, for the most part, looks just like Twitter.

So what’s so attractive about the platform?

While Twitter and Facebook are controlled by one company, Mastodon is installed on thousands of computer servers and is largely run by volunteer administrators who join their systems together in a federation.

Mastodon was founded by Eugen Rochko in 2017, and its typical growth had averaged 60-80 new users an hour. Following Musk’s Twitter takeover, the platform showed 3,568 new registrations in the same period of time.

Friday Fun

Feeling like you need a little motivation to push through your day before the weekend? Look no further!
